Several Drains Blocked at the Same Time

Find the point where the affected drains join

A sink, shower and toilet often start on separate pipes and join farther downstream. If they all back up at the same time, finding the point where those branches meet can help narrow down the blockage.

Inspection chambers can help because the last chamber that is flowing normally and the first one that is full often bracket the blockage.

Ask whether neighbouring properties have the same problem

If the neighbour’s toilet or chamber backs up at the same time as yours, the obstruction is likely to be beyond the point where the properties join. Check who owns that shared section before paying a private contractor.

Who deals with a shared drain depends on where you live

If several properties are backing up, check the wastewater company before paying for private work. In England and Wales, many shared sewers and lateral drains are maintained by the sewerage company; Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own arrangements.

Why water often comes up at the lowest fitting

Wastewater under pressure will usually appear at the easiest escape point. In a house with a low shower tray or floor-level gully, that may be where water appears even though the obstruction lies several metres away. The place where sewage reappears is therefore evidence about level, not necessarily the location of the blockage.

A drain that backs up only during prolonged rain needs a different check from one that blocks in dry weather. Find out whether rainwater shares the same system and whether a surface-water line or soakaway is overloaded.
