Drain Lining or Excavation?
Lining only works if there is still a continuous route through the damaged pipe. If the bore has disappeared, one section has shifted across another or equipment cannot pass, the failed section has to be exposed.
A liner still needs a pipe it can pass through
If cleaning and CCTV show that the pipe is still open from one access point to the next, lining may be practical even where cracks or root entry are present.
If the pipe has lost its shape, digging becomes more likely
A fully collapsed section, a large offset or a failed junction can leave no path for lining equipment. Digging down to that point may then be the shortest reliable repair.
Compare what is actually included in the price
Internal repair can avoid reinstating paving or landscaping. Excavation may nevertheless be the better option for a short, shallow defect with easy access.
Sometimes a small excavation is the simpler answer
No-dig repair is valuable beneath a drive, floor or landscaped area. A shallow broken joint in an open flower bed may be quicker and cheaper to expose directly, so the surface above the pipe matters as much as the repair technology.
Conversely, a sound but cracked pipe beneath a finished driveway may be an excellent candidate for lining. The location above the pipe matters almost as much as the defect inside it.
